Southeast Middle School | Farm to Table
Purpose: The purpose of the grant is to expose the students to the "hard work" that farmers implement to produce everything that they eat and drink. In order implement the project students will learn to create plant beds, care for the plants and create problem solving solutions to any situation that may arise. The scientific method will be implemented on a daily basis and research will be applied. The educational strategies of using measurement and science will assist the student's STEM process evolving.
Impact: Students previously enrolled in the SMS agriculture course have developed leadership skills, mathematical skills, with an awareness of the science behind farming techniques. Students have become aware of the work that is involved when planting, harvesting, and preparing crops to be consumed. They have developed a respect for bringing the crops from "the Farm to the Table". They have learned how to measure when preparing plant beds, creating compost bins and developing their cooking skills. Each student has learned to properly journal the day's events, while learning to develop their social skills when working together. Students have also been able to apply scientific knowledge to their activities, through the use of bell work.
Agriculture students have expressed a desire to become entrepreneurs. They will do this by planting crops and selling them this year. We also hope to accomplish this dream, by raising chickens.
Update: Currently, SMS has just completed the second year of the up and coming agriculture course.
