Scotlandville Pre-Engineering Magnet Academy | Feeding the Community-School Grant
Purpose: This program is an extension of our current school garden. Funds will be used to build a green house to grow additional vegetables as well as develop a fish pond.
The school will be expanding the current school garden to include a greenhouse as well as a small fish pond. The Scotlandville area has the largest food desert in Baton Rouge due to the community members not being able to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables within more than a 5 mile radius. Since more than 70,000 residents in East Baton Rouge Parish live in this area, the school has created a garden filled with fruits, vegetables, and herbs that are grown and shared with the community. The addition of the greenhouse will shield crops from extreme temperatures. This will allow us to have more sustainability of the crops to provide to the local senior living complex that is located behind the school.
Impact: The Green House is in the process of being built. The summer camp students are still constructing the house. The school garden has been expanded. Food has been donated to local residents to assist with combating the food desert in North Baton Rouge. The establishment as well as extension of garden has had a major impact on the students. The students have been trained on how to cultivate and sustain a garden. In addition, students have been educated about a food desert and its impact on this particular geographical area.
