Riveroaks Elementary School | Spicing up Literacy with STEM-School Grant

Purpose: Through this project students will be able to connect concepts of Pollination that are being taught in reading subject blocks to hands on experiences. Pollination STEM activities will help to deepen understanding and all underlying concepts connected to it.This project is meant to allow students to connect concepts and ideas covered in reading subject area to hands on activities through STEM. There are many students who are kinesthetic learners so the activities that will be implemented in this project will open a new world of learning and even help to deepen understanding of content in reading, math and science. Students will also be able to explore with technology tools. Since technology is one the main tools of our world, this will further engage students in great learning experiences. Through this project students will cover math and science concepts such as pollination, seed dispersal, parts of a plant, plant life cycle, plant needs , measurement, graphing, addition, and subtraction. This project will allow students to understand the importance of pollinating insects and plants in our world. Students will appreciate flowers and insects more after completing this project.

Impact: As a result of this project, the students in all second grades classes were able to engage in hands on STEM activities that directly connected to concepts that were being taught in their reading block. We were able to see the excitement on the students faces when they seen first hand how pollination works and how they can help pollinators. Students engaged in a STEM activity that challenged them to design their own hand pollinator. This activity connected all subjects across the board, from art to math! Students were also able to use the chrome books purchased through this grant to research different pollinators and publish their very own book! As a culminating activity, the second grade students helped the pollinators in our community by creating a pollinator school garden which features some of the plants that we learned about in our reading curriculum, EL education. We plan to keep these activities ongoing year after year so each group of second grade students will experience these great activities.
