Park Forest Middle School | Tier 1 and ISTE Curriculum Alignment

Park Forest Middle School | Tier 1 and ISTE Curriculum Alignment

Purpose: Using official ISTE training, this project will allow me to address the needs of 21st century learners by using cross-curriculum planning with Louisiana Student Standards and ISTE standards. I will work closely with core content teachers to plan lessons that better meet the needs of learners through technology-enhanced lessons.

States, districts and schools are using the ISTE Standards as their framework for digital learning because the standards are based on research, were built by educators for educators and help prepare students for success in a digital world. ISTE certification is not focused on edtech, but how it to be used pedagogically to help my students learn content throughout all content areas. Through the ISTE Certification process, I will participate in professional learning based on the ISTE Standards and transformative pedagogy. After completing the training, I have six months to apply learning and compile artifacts and reflections into a competency-based portfolio to earn ISTE Certification. I am compelled and passionate about this project because many students matriculate through school without addressing these standards at all which is unacceptable. This project is necessary to prepare all students for success in the real world.

Impact: Thanks to the ADF grant, students at Park Forest Middle School are using "technology not simply for technology's sake" but to master standards in innovative ways. After attending the ISTE Certification workshop, I have able to collaborate with teachers at my school to use technology to transform their lessons without deterrence from objectives. Students are excited and as a result, engagement has improved tremendously. Because of this, Park Forest Middle was able to successfully implement a STEM after- school club which was attended voluntarily by students as well as production of our first ever Robotics competition. We have also had successful recruitment of incoming 6th graders for our 6th Grade Summer Transition Camp which we were unable to do in previous summers. Although we have only completed our first year as a magnet school, I believe that unique measures we have implemented have attracted diversity and even more students choosing to apply for our magnet program. In the upcoming school year, I would like to work more directly with the core content classes, especially during curriculum planning.
