Board Spotlight: Honoring Mary Kay Carleton’s Years of Dedicated Service
This month, we proudly recognize and celebrate the outstanding board service of Mary Kay Carleton, who has been a steadfast advocate for public education and a guiding voice on the Foundation for East Baton Rouge School System Board of Directors since 2018. As she concludes her board service, including a term as Board Treasurer, we reflect on her lasting impact and the legacy she leaves behind.
A Legacy Rooted in Public Education
Mary Kay’s journey with East Baton Rouge public schools runs deep. Her connection to education began at home—her mother taught at Baton Rouge High School for nearly 30 years, and Mary Kay herself is a proud graduate of EBR Public Schools. She continued that legacy by raising two sons who also attended EBR schools.
When former board member Jim Brandt encouraged her to consider joining the Foundation’s board, she readily agreed. “I have a deep appreciation for and family association with EBR Public Schools,” she shared. “I want our public school children to have everything they need for success.”
A Meaningful and Educational Experience
Throughout her tenure, Mary Kay brought a thoughtful, service-driven approach to her board leadership. Her work as Board Treasurer reflected her commitment to transparency, growth, and long-term sustainability. But beyond titles and roles, Mary Kay will be remembered for her collaborative spirit and sincere dedication.
“I will remember all the wonderful and dedicated people I met through the board,” she said, describing her experience in one word: Educational. “I learned so much about early learning centers and wish everyone could see these amazing gems.”
Advice and Aspirations for the Future
Mary Kay’s advice for incoming and future board members?
“Jump in with both feet—there is a lot to be accomplished.”
As she looks ahead, she envisions a future where the Foundation continues to grow in impact and independence. “I hope to see the Foundation achieve independence from EBRSS operations and significant growth to fulfill the mission.”
She also shared a literary wish: to see “Something About the Sky by Rachel Carson” in elementary classrooms throughout the district—underscoring her belief in curiosity, environmental learning, and literacy for all students.
With Gratitude
Mary Kay Carleton’s contributions to the Foundation have helped shape our path forward. Her insights, leadership, and love for public education have left a meaningful mark on our work—and on the lives of countless students and educators across the district.
On behalf of the entire Foundation team, we say thank you, Mary Kay, for your years of service and your unwavering belief in the potential of EBR’s students.
