A Covid-19 Call of Action!
As you may know, our network of schools serves approximately 41,000 students - eighty percent (80%) of whom rely heavily upon receiving breakfast and lunch served in school at no or reduced cost to them due to their family’s socioeconomic status. Eighty percent. In an effort to keep those children from going hungry during this mandatory, month-long school shutdown, our school district is converting these two meals cafeteria-served meals into single daily “Grab N Go” meals at 9 various sites around East Baton Rouge. Without these portable meal boxes and supplies, cafeteria food cannot be served curbside (as the mandatory Coronavirus protocol requires) and would therefore not reach hungry children.
At this point, ours is the last public school system that is continuing to feed our children in this capital area vicinity. Last Wednesday, our first day, we served 4,000 kids. Thursday we served roughly 6,000, Friday 9,000, and Monday 12,000+….and that number is sure to increase. We plan to continue providing food Monday – Friday through at least the mandated date of April 13, 2020.
That’s 14 days x 15,000 boxes (rough projection) = 210,000 boxes. In order to continue to handle the rapidly escalating numbers, we need your help!
At the independent non-profit Foundation for East Baton Rouge School System, our goal is to serve as a conduit that enables the community to provide support to EBRPSS students through needed goods, resources, and services that go unmet by taxes and other sources of funding. Our connecting the School System with you is one example of fulfilling this mission.
We truly appreciate your support!
