Future scientists are sitting in East Baton Rouge Parish classrooms today! Funding from ExxonMobil is providing hands-on student experiences in biology classes at Baton Rouge Magnet High School.

Join us this month when Superintendent Warren Drake discusses the 2018-2019 school year and welcomes the community to play an active role. Drake will discuss his vision , the district’s ever evolving Magnet Programs and how the innovative programming is changing the landscape of The East Baton Rouge Parish School System.

A program that's already seen success in East Baton Rouge Parish is expanding. The goal is to give high school students a head start in landing quality careers.

The faces of future leaders are getting a golden chance to learn about science and engineering in the workplace while still in high school.

“The National Science Foundation says that this year, we're going to have a million unfilled jobs, a million unfilled jobs in STEM related careers,” said Congressman Garret Graves.

Graves had a strong message at the launch for GEN READY, an initiative focusing on increasing knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and math. The program, originally called the BR STEM Network, will now expand to ten other parishes. It will also create more partnerships with businesses and industry leaders.

“A dream is hollow, it's only an idea if we don't actually have the capacity, the content, the skills to fulfill it,” said Graves.

For many young students, those dreams and hopes are becoming a reality.

The Foundation for East Baton Rouge School System is hosting the launch of GEN READY, A Capital Area STEM Collaborative. The launch event will highlight the GEN READY Education to Employment Roadmap based on best practices that will meet the accelerating demand for STEM skills and specific STEM jobs in our region.

The Foundation for East Baton Rouge School System is seeking proposals from educators in elementary, middle and high schools in East Baton Rouge Parish School System to implement high-quality, innovative STEM programs.

Funding to support projects in classrooms, across grade levels or even school-wide is available through a generous grant from ExxonMobil. Grants will be made available to classroom teachers or to schools. Grant awards may range from $250-$10,000 per project. Projects must be innovative and have potential for replication in other schools in East Baton Rouge Parish School System. Projects should focus on increasing student interest and engagement in STEM.

Libby Witte, an AmeriCorps VISTA member serving the Foundation's STEMup BR mentoring program recently won second place in the National Corporation for Community Service video competition.

This month the Superintendent looks to the future of the district and will present his vision for an innovative quality public education system. The renewal of the 10 year sales tax presents a fresh perspective on a variety of topics such as the strategic plan, budget, ESSA, attendance zones, and programming. Superintendent Drake will give a detailed description of the next steps for The East Baton Rouge Parish School System.

The purpose of the STEM Teaching Fellows is to establish and support a cadre of “STEM Teaching Fellows” who, armed with content knowledge, innovative teaching strategies, and an entrepreneurial spirit, can support their colleagues and transform EBRPSS schools into institutions of innovative STEM teaching and learning. The STEM Teaching Fellows program features year-round professional development tailored to the needs and interests of the participants and collaborative resource-building and sharing activities.

Applications being accepted through May 11.

Our AmeriCorps VISTAs continue to be an invaluable asset to the work we do in our STEM mentoring programs. Currently, we have openings for our Summer Associate program, as well as year-long service members.

These girls are growing up fast and showing interest in STEM learning opportunities. For the fifth year, partners supporting IT-Girls are making sure female students have a fighting chance to live their dreams. The annual event is called IT Girls and is co-sponsored by Louisiana Women in Technology and STEMup BR.

Baton Rouge Celebrates Engineering! Engineers Week is a time for everyone to celebrate and wonder what the next big innovation will be. It’s also a great opportunity for volunteers and educators to inspire students by engaging them in hands-on engineering outreach. Show them that their school subjects can help solve real problems. And, of course, encourage them to wonder, "Is engineering my future?"
